Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that forces children and their families into a lifelong battle. By inhibiting the production of healthy hemoglobin and red blood cells, the condition causes severe anemia, chronic fatigue, and organ failure.

 

In South Asia, the prevalence of this disorder is a growing public health challenge, as highlighted by these current carrier rates

Carrier Rates of Thalassemia in Pakistan

According to the Springer researches:

  • Pakistan a high thalassemia burden, about 5-8% of people are suffering from β-thalassemia.
  • Approximately 100,000 people suffering from β-thalassemia dependent on transfusions.

According to Pub-Med researches

  • In Pakistan around 5,000 people are born with β-thalassemia annually in Pakistan.

Carrier Rates of Thalassemia in Bangladesh

According to the PMC  researches:

  • Around 10.9-13.3% of Bangladesh’s population are suffering from Thalassemia which is equivalent to 17-22 million people.
  • A national survey suggests that around 70,000 patients are currently suffering from the various forms of thalassemia which urgently require medical care.
  • Around 10,000 children are born with Thalassemia annually, 2,000 with severe transfusion-dependent disease.

Carrier Rates of Thalassemia in India

According to the PMC

  • India has a thalassemia carrier rate of 2.78 - 4%, which is equivalent to 30 - 48 million carriers nationwide

According to the The Times of India researches:

  • There are 4,000 people registered with thalassemia in Rajasthan and about 100-200 people are registered with thalassemia annually.

According to the Wikipedia researches:

  • There are approximately 10,000–12,000 babies born with thalassemia annually in India

Carrier Rates of Thalassemia in Nepal

According to the PMC researches:

  • Around 37.1% prevalence of thalassemia or hemoglobin disorder carriers in the Tharu ethnic group in the Terai region of Nepal.

With over 100,000 children affected and nearly 20,000 new cases annually, widespread poverty and malnutrition create a “double burden,” making life-saving blood transfusions and treatment inaccessible for many families.
